Game Elements

Hello again!

Today I am talking about Game Elements or Element of Games. Starting my readings I was closed minded. I really don't think much into Games at all, so every reading I go though makes me think a lot more about games themselves. Today it was all the different elements to games from the obvious - players but then there is themes (storytelling) and then objectives.
The first one I'm talking about is the easiest one Players - or I thought. The opening question was 'how many players does the game support?'. This question immediately made me think of my potential game. There is a lot more than just how many players, theres questions like can people leave the game during play time does this effect the game play? Even what relationships each-player has with each-other are they team members or are they competition?
Without thinking about all the elements above you wont be able to make that perfect game. There will be too many problems if you don't cleverly think about your game plan.  Further though the article they mention different player designs such as

The second is Theme. This is another important part of making a game. What would you have without a theme? An endless game with no purpose. Firstly going into a deeper meaning of theme whats included?

  • Settings- The setting of the game provides an emotional connection for the player. For example in chess there is no real setting, but in monopoly you have a setting. (you're an investor trying to avoid becoming bankrupt on an imaginary street). You become so much more invested in a game of monopoly than chess and everyone has experienced the huge rows during monopoly (if you play it right) due to the setting.
  • Theme- A well chosen theme makes a game so much easier to understand and play because the rules make sense.

Finally the third article I read was Objectives (goals). Again this opened up with vital questions of
"What is the object of the game? What are the players trying to do? " once the designer has understood the objective many of the other elements will follow along with it.
A few examples of objectives are stated below:

  • Solve. The board game Cluedo is an example of a game where the objective is to solve a puzzle.
  • Chase/race/escape. This anything where you are running towards or away from something such as  Tag and the games like temple run, SuperMario kart.

But now thats all I've got to say on this subject.

See you soon!
